CENNI STORICI

HISTORICAL SIGNS:
The term "Gleichschaltung" can be translated as "coordination", and in it leads very clearly the idea of the perfect synchronism of gears whos e juxtaposition and movement leads to correct function of the "machine". In this sense, for the National Socialist "Staatsapparat", a malfunction standing among many, but perhaps the one that raised more fears, carried within itself subversive characters that were going mining irremediably the Schiksal of the Reich, destiny painted with the whiteness of the dreams for some glossy images of propaganda, of mud, deprivation and uncertainty for 400.000 Jews who were in Warsaw on 27 September 1939. It was the occasion to redeem further "the misfortune"1 that was dragging on from the Middle Ages (never so painful as the identification number of kz-inmates) to resolve the long-standing "Judenfrage" perhaps, or at least synchronise it, co-ordinate it. In this case the directives were clear. The model to be applied ( of medieval ancestry) was already done, it was going back to the "Councils Lateran" of 1200 A.C and historically have been been already tested: erecting high walls, hedges and ditches, economic restrictions apply to commercial affaires, identify, distinguish, separate and denigrate. Beyond that, it was becoming the road of indistinct violence also already experienced in the ghetto of "Frankfurt" in 1349.
1 According to the assumption of 1876 of Heinrich von Treitschke "the Jews are our misfortune". Later used by the anti-Semitic daily paper "Der Stürmer", published by Julius Streicher.
The problem in the gear of the Reich was at least localized and circumscribed, but it was necessary to eliminate it. It was 1939. The concentration camp system was already active: remember "Dachau", opened in the March 1933. It recreates an intermediate step between the point of departure (the house) and the point of arrival (the elimination). This intermediate point is the ghetto, system of functional transition to the production machine whose numbers represent the number of the extermination. Second only to the Litzmannstadt Ghetto, also Warsaw, (then already capital of Poland), so had his own, the largest of the whole Europe, organised in an area of 840 acres2 in which, life had already ceased to be dignified even before the deportations of 1942 that saw disappear 311.000 Jews in the concentration camps of Auschwitz, Treblinka and others. The deportations of that period (June - July 1942)3 created a huge deficit to the economy of the ghetto going worsening the already heaviest conditions of life. According to the official sources, to concluded deportations, in the ghetto were not more than 35.639 Jews remained, the same administrative structures inside the ghetto imploded as reported by numerous reports of the clandestine organizations that were lamenting the disastrous management of the "Judenrat" and the police themselves. Unlike other situations of the General Governorship, the Warsaw ghetto had already expressed various activities of resistance, the clandestine movements were numerous, as well as acts of sabotage, the production of explosives and analogous actions. 5.000 between the inmates, led by Mordechai Anielewicz and by Yitzhak Zuckerman, already founder of the ZOB ( Jewish Fighting Organization ) were organized by themselves and began an armed revolt (duration 28 days) against the squadrons of the SS- und Polizeiführer Jürgen Stroop, composed by the worst criminals among volunteers Ukrainians, Estonians, Lithuanians and Latvians.
The Germans were forced to withdraw twice, but the revolt ended on May 16 1943, with the complete destruction of the ghetto and the killing of all except a hundred who managed to hide in the ruins and then escape through the sewers and join partisans groups, hidden in the woods. Among them were also Yitzhak Zuckerman known as "the commander Antek" and witness at the Eichmann trial in 1961.4
2 About 2 square Km (0.8 square Mi.)
3 Two hundred of the deported were Hebrew children orphans whom the doctor Janus Korczac accompanied in the gas chambers of Treblinka.
4 For the testimony of Zuckerman see "Eichmann Trial - season 25".
REQUIEM FOR 500.000: TESTIMONY OF THE GLEICHSCHALTUNG
Seventy years after the end of the war, there are still many stories to tell, but that one of the Warsaw ghetto and of the courage of its inhabitants boasts some exception documents. Requiem for 500.000 5 is a film realised by the operators of the Ministry of the propaganda of the Reich and ordered by the RuSHA6 to document how it was organized and supervised the life inside the ghetto and how the revolt was quelled. Once again the emphasis is on Gleichschaltung, perfect coordination of supervision, discipline and punishment.
If we take in consideration "Theresienstadt: Ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem jüdischen Siedlun"7 turned by Kurt Gerron8 in 1944, as in the title appears the voice "documentary film" we know that the film is a fiction created in order to propagandise how the life in the ghetto was dignified and far from unpleasant.
In Requiem for 500.000 points of origin are present only in the first part of the film (the one that was destined to the newsreels) where they represent the magnanimity of the Reich. Since the first sequences, what emerges, is that the life in the ghetto is not so badly: there is food, order, organization and even entertainment. The added value of the resumptions of repertoire of Requiem for 500.000, as well as being of great historical and documentary value, it is not therefore to want to represent the "dignified" life of the Jews in the ghetto, but to demonstrate the tidy organization of the SS: from the transfer of the Jews in long and composed rows to the distribution of the ration cards up to the sequences (obviously not transmitted by the newsreels) that show the system of supervision and punishment (the suppression of the revolt).
5 Requiem dla 500.000, Jerzy Bossak and Waclaw Kazimierczack, 1963.
6 SS-Rasse und Siedlungshauptamt o "RuSHA, "Central Office for the Race and Colonies", constituted at the end of 1931.
7 "Terezin": A documentary film on the resettlement of the Jews", also known as: "The Führer gives a town to the Jews" .
8 Kurt Gerron, actor in a celebrated film of the epoch (The Blue Angel with the diva Marlene Dietrich) Der blau Engel, Josef von Sternberg in 1930, was an inhabitant of the Theresienstadt ghetto. Near the second visit of the International Committee of the Red Cross, which had to verify the status of the ghettos, Kurt Gerron was charged to make a film that would document the happy life of the Jews. Theresienstadt was supposed to appear an idyllic place, where Jews, not only had food in abundance, but they also had the opportunity to practice music and attending shows. Obviously, the implementation of this farce acted, at dawn of the monitoring visit of the Italian Red Cross, numerous victims, because those who did not enjoy good health and a good appearance were eliminated. Kurt, who had been excluded from all the theatres, returned in the world of entertainment with an ungrateful task: to turn a fiction at the expense of their own brothers. Kurt Gerron died in Auschwitz the day before that Heinrich Himmler decreed the closure of the gas chambers. With him died all the extras of the film.
The maniacal degree from the Ministry of Propaganda for the photographic registration and the film documentation has meant that the Germans would become victims of their own instruments in all that, images contained in this film, were used as testimonies for the charges to the process of Nuremberg.

Gianfranco Moscati was born in Milan, on 30th December 1924. In 1943 because of be embittering of the Hebrew persecutions, he was forced to leave Italy together with other members of his family. He took refuge in Switzerland where he remained up to the liberation of Milan. At the end of the war, Moscati started to pick up the first documents related to the anti-Semitism and anti-Hebrew persecution in Italy and in the rest of Europe.
Today the "Gianfranco Moscati Collection" has approximately 2500 documents and it been presented in the February of 2007 to Imperial War Museum of London. In these last years, as well as to devote him self, to the continuous research of historical documents and unique pieces about the Shoah, Gianfranco Moscati has lavished all the proceeds from the sale of his catalogues and books to the Paediatric Hospital Alyn of Jerusalem, to the Recreation centre and to the motherly and elementary school Shaloja of the uncomfortable quarter of San Giovanni in Teduccio of Naples. The great humanity that has distinguished him during his life and work has done so that in January of 2011, President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano , has decorated him with title of Knight of Merit of the Italian Republic.
